Helen's Work
Out in the landscape, Helen spends hours walking, sitting, standing - scrutinising the land, to fully absorb the scenery and environment and take in as much as she can. Not constrained by time, Helen will often go out into the wilds at night for a different experience to truly feel the landscape through the darkness. Whatever the time of day her sketchbook is always to hand to document her observations and make notes.
When she's back in her studio, she works to refine all of her memories, sketches and recordings into her painting. Using oils as her chosen medium, she uses a number of different techniques to bring together the sensory and visual world. Sometimes her work will take on a more abstract expressionist approach, other times there is a finer distilled handling of the paint. Contours of the land may be suggested through a wash of paint representing light rain or mist. Horizon lines coming and going, appearing and disappearing as distance becomes momentarily tangible and land masses float. This is the essence of capturing fleeting moments on a specific day and representing the personality of a place - every brushstroke bringing atmosphere and emotion to the painting.
